Cidadãos em geral...), é um inadiável imperativo universal (permita-se-me a insistência!...), contribuirmos, de modo articulado, convergente e persistente, para a promoção dos "GRANDES VALORES ANTROPO-GENEALÓGICOS, SAPIENCIAIS, CIVILIZACIONAIS E CULTURAIS" e para a configuração, nos espaços, múltiplos e diversos, do exercício concreto da "CIDADANIA", de uma esclarecida "CONDUTA ÉTICA", pessoal e comunitária, que se deseja cada vez mais interventiva e transformadora e, assim, mais eficaz e produtiva... Conscientes da fragilidade, vulnerabilidade, efemeridade, imperfeição e demais limitações da nossa "condição humana", afigura-se-nos pertinente recordar, aqui, como inaugural ponto de referência reflexivo, o pensamento do filósofo hispano-romano Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Córdova: 4 a.C.; Roma: 65 d.C.), quando nos diz que «membra sumus corporis magni» («somos membros de um grande corpo») e que «Natura nos cognatos edidit» («a Natureza nos deu à luz com o mesmo grau de parentesco» 1). Como reforço ilustrativo deste humaníssimo modo de pensar de Séneca, importa considerar a citação completa: «... Natura nos cognatos edidit, cum ex isdem et in eadem gigneret; haec nobis amorem indidit mutuum et sociabiles fecit. Illa aequum iustumque composuit; ex illius constitutione miserius est nocere quam laedi; ex illius imperio paratae sint iuvandis manus. [53] Ille versus et in pectore et in ore sit: homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto» (os itálicos são meus). The present paper shapes the discursive development of a reflexion settled on anthropological, philosophical, cultural and humanistic bases about Medicine (while sapiential and civilizational creation of the man, and while specialized and essencial health care social organization, thought, conceived and designed to accomplish a purpose and consummate a destiny: to do and try to do everything to protect and keep the human life in that all-embracing state of dynamic equilibrium and identifying and stabilizing homeostasis which preserves the inner and outer well-being serene harmony...). That reflexion directly involves the problems of HUMAN LIFE, DISEASE / INFIRMITY, HEALTH, HEALTH SYSTEMS, PATIENTS, DOCTORS’ KEY ROLE IN A HOLISTIC AND «ORCHESTRAL» HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION («a physician is a man worth more than other men», Homer: Iliad, XI; 514), ETHICS, DEONTOLOGY AND MEDICAL PRAXIS, CITIZENSHIP, HEALTH POLITICS (founded in a new model of democracy: an ethical democracy in which the humanitas of each man is the concrete measure of the dignity of all men), EDUCATION, HEALTH PLANETARY CITY... The NUCLEAR AIM of this paper consists on CONTRIBUTING TO INCREASING THE HUMANISTIC AND HUMANITARIAN DIMENSIONS OF THE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING ON MEDICAL SCIENCES AND HEALTH CARE AREAS, AND TO AVOID THE DANGER OF A BLIND AND STRANGLING «TECHNIFICA TION» OF THE MEDICAL PRAXIS AND PERFORMANCE, THROUGH AN UNDESIRABLE ETHICAL INVERSION OR SUBVERSION OF THE ENDS BY THE MEANS. As a prologue to the paper titled “Understanding the Personalistic Aspects of Jola Ethnomedicine,” the present essay provides a brief anthropologico-philosophical reflection, starting with classic Roman philosopher Seneca and his dictum that “each passing day we die,” and continuing on to the profound existential questions pondered by more contemporary thinkers, including Heidegger and Levinas, about life, death, being, time, totality, and infinity. These agonically deep questions are intimately related to the universal human angst about health, illness, and death and the seeking of a restoration to a functional corporal and mental harmony and well-being through various means and methods, whether based on traditional religious or mythical beliefs and practices or on more modern medical practices. This essay also provides a diachronic philological analysis of the evolution of the word “health” in various languages and its age- old semantic connections to the idea of the “holly” and the “sacred.” These semantic roots lead the author to define health as a “holistic, cosmic, integral, and sacred state of dynamic harmony.”

O presente ensaio configura o desenvolvimento discursivo de uma reflexão assente numa base antropológica, filosófica, cultural e humanística sobre a MEDICINA (entendida quer como criação sapiencial e civilizacional do homem, quer como especializada e essencial organização social dos cuidados de saúde, pensada, concebida e planeada para realizar uma finalidade e consumar um destino: fazer e tentar fazer tudo para proteger e manter a vida humana naquele englobante estado de equilíbrio dinâmico e de homeostase identitária e estabilizadora que preserva a serena harmonia do bem-estar interior e exterior…). Essa reflexão envolve directamente problemas como os da VIDA HUMANA, da DOENÇA, da SAÚDE e SISTEMAS DE SAÚDE, dos DOENTES e do PAPEL NUCLEAR DOS MÉDICOS NUMA ORGANIZAÇÃO HOLÍSTICA E «ORQUESTRAL» DOS CUIDADOS DE SAÚDE («um médico é um homem que vale por muitos outros», Homero: Ilíada, XI, 514), da PRÁXIS, da ÉTICA e da DEONTOLOGIA MÉDICAS, da CIDADANIA, das POLÍTICAS DE SAÚDE (estabelecidas à luz de um novo modelo de democracia: ou seja, uma democracia ética em que a humanitas de cada homem passe a ser a real e concreta medida da dignidade de todos os homens), da EDUCAÇÃO e da CIDADE PLANETÁRIA DA SAÚDE... O OBJECTIVO NUCLEAR deste ensaio consiste em CONTRIBUIR PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DAS DIMENSÕES HUMANÍSTICA E HUMANITÁRIA AO NÍVEL DA FORMAÇÃO ACADÉMICA E PROFISSIONAL DOS CURSOS DE MEDICINA E DEMAIS CURSOS DA ÁREA DA SAÚDE E PARA EVITAR O PERIGO DE UMA CEGA E ESTRANGULADORA «TECNIFICAÇÃO» DOS DESEMPENHOS MÉDICOS, ATRAVÉS DE UMA INDESEJÁVEL INVERSÃO OU SUBVERSÃO ÉTICA DOS FINS PELOS MEIOS. In this reflective essay, the author makes an urgent appeal to humanity in favor of the adoption of a concept of freedom that recognizes that it, freedom, can only be realized when assumed with a sense of moral, axiological, and ethical responsibility, as well as a sense of obligation and respect towards the “Other” and all beings who find themselves in situations of vulnerability. The author’s line of argumentation is grounded on the great philosophical, axiological, and social European thought traditions, and it is accompanied by a critique of some post-modernist currents of thought as well as the primacy given to the logic of capital accumulation in contemporary societies. The latter have brought us to a social state characterized by debauchery, selfishness (me first), arrogance, in sum, an “anything goes” way of life. This societal state, in turn, and in another extreme, has resulted in the emergence of orthodoxies, demagoguery, bigotry, and various forms of oppression. It has also led to the devaluation and trivialization of the arts and the humanities, precisely because they cannot be easily subjugated to the logic of accumulation of savage capitalism.
